Every time you say or do something to help our planet’s marine life, you join some pretty illustrious company.
Some of the biggest name celebs in the world have spoken out in defence of dolphins and whales. We’ve compiled a list of just a few of them, to keep you inspired in your day-to-day activism.
1. Sean Penn, Cher, Susan Sarandon, Oliver Stone, Ellen DeGeneres, Charlize Theron, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston, Robin Williams… and more!
In February 2014 Hollywood hierarchy took a decided stance against the Taiji dolphin hunts when Sean Penn, Cher, Susan Sarandon, Oliver Stone, Ellen DeGeneres, Charlize Theron, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston, and Jesse Jackson all spoke out against the hunts.
The slew of stars came together to sign a heartfelt letter to the number one big kahuna, President Barack Obama. They urged him not to sign the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) until Japan banned the slaughter and capture of dolphins.
These heavyweights were later joined by other big names including Ben Stiller, Courtney Cox, Naomi Watts, Woody Harrelson, Paul Rudd, and Robin Williams, who put together a stirring public service announcement against the Taiji hunts.
Seriously, dolphins have friends in some very high places.
2. Harry Styles
According to leading economists, One Direction singer Harry Styles may have bought down an entire marine park empire with just four little words at a San Diego concert this year. All he had to say was “Don’t go to SeaWorld”, and then this happened:
According to Credit Suisse, Harry’s words sent SeaWorld’s reputation plunging on social media.
And this wasn’t the singer’s first time defending dolphins. In September 2012 Styles tweeted about The Cove, and two years later he announced support of Ric O’Barry’s Dolphin Project on Twitter.
I guess the lesson to SeaWorld here is, never underestimate the collective power of social media. And having an army of pre-pubescent girls hanging off your every word probably doesn’t hurt either.
3. Arya Stark and Cersei Lannister
Front and centre at the infamous One Direction concert where Harry Styles put the touch of death on SeaWorld was fellow dolphin advocate Maisie Williams – a.k.a Arya Stark from the hit HBO series Game of Thrones!
Maisie played a big part in helping Harry’s SeaWorld diss go viral on social media, tweeting it to her 1.3 million followers.
Maisie has also been seen taking part in London protests against the annual Taiji dolphin slaughters, and has even jumped out of a plane to raise money and awareness for the hunts.
As it turns out, Maisie isn’t the only GoT actor using their star power to promote kindness to animals. Although you’d be more likely to witness Arya Stark and the formidable Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) trying to kill each other on-screen, in real life the co-stars have a lot in common.
Lena is a vocal animal welfare supporter, and has taken to the Internet to speak out against cruelty in circuses before. The Queen of Westeros has also used her Twitter account to have a go at SeaWorld, using some less than encouraging adjectives to describe the chain’s new ad campaign.
4. Russell Brand
The gyrating truth teller and long-time vegan is not one to shy away from speaking up. And he clearly loves animals, as evidenced by this charming talk-show photo:
It’s no surprise then that Russ isn’t a big fan of keeping dolphins and orcas in tiny, chlorinated tanks.
In fact, he refers to SeaWorld as “a stain upon humanity posing as entertainment”. Ouch.
5. Ariana Grande
Ariana Grande is stronger without SeaWorld.
The proud vegan and pint-size pop star has called on her fans to watch Blackfish, and never visit the marine park chain again.
6. Aaron Paul
Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul is an animal lover from way back. But he has zero love for the marine park chain everyone loves to hate.
Just take a look at the snappy and succinct letter her wrote to SeaWorld on Twitter, on behalf of everyone who actually cares about animals:
Listen to Aaron, SW. Release the slaves!
7. Ricky Gervais
Finally, no list of animal loving celebs would be complete without Ricky Gervais.
Whether he is posting videos of his cat Ollie to his 3.5 million+ Facebook followers,
Calling out fox hunters for being ‘posh twats’,
Or making fun of wild game hunters,
Ricky is always using his voice to defend animals.
So of course The Office star has spoken out against the Taiji drive hunts and SeaWorld on a number of occasions.
Including this classic observation, dreaming of a bizzaro universe SeaWorld where the dolphins and whales live happily with ample room for activities:
Remember, you don’t have to be a celebrity to make a difference in the battle to protect dolphins and whales from cruelty.
All you have to do is speak up, and together, we can help make the world a kinder place for animals.
