2020 has been a year like no other. It’s been tough on all of us, but the holiday season is just around the corner and with it a well-deserved break. For many, this is a time to relax, unwind, and spend time catching up with loved ones. But it’s also a great opportunity to support marine life.
There are many ways you can help dolphins this Chrissie – we’ve put together a list of our favourite ideas for some inspiration.
- Buy plastic-free, sustainable gifts
Over 8 million tonnes of plastic waste enters the ocean each year, 80% of which comes from land-based sources.
By opting for ethical and environmentally friendly gifts you can help reduce marine plastic waste. Simple swaps such as cutting out single use plastics, avoiding products with microbeads, and wrapping gifts in recyclable or even reusables coverings can make a huge difference.
Take a look at our 10 ways to reduce ocean plastic blog to find out more.
- Drink wine… yes really!
The awesome team at Goodwill Wine donate an enormous 50% of their profits to charity. By selecting AFD as your charity of choice, their generous support will go straight towards helping dolphins.
They have a huge range of wines and everything is 100% vegan. What’s more, they use recycled cartons and offset their freight by planting trees in permanent forests right across Australia.
Here’s a chance to drink wine, support dolphins, and protect the planet at the same time. It’s a no-brainer really.
Please note, Goodwill Wine is only available for our supporters in Australia.
- Rock some merch
If you’re on the lookout for an ethical gift, or fancy scoring yourself a new tee, consider purchasing some AFD merch.
From tees to tote bags, we’ve got loads to choose from, meaning you can look great and help protect dolphins. Check out our store here: https://action-for-dolphins.myshopify.com
Go on, treat yourself!
- Say ‘no’ to that smoked salmon starter
Fishing is one of the biggest threats to the health of our seas.
A shocking 30% of fish are currently over-fished, and entanglement in fishing gear is the leading threat for whales and dolphins around the world. It’s estimated at least 300,000 cetaceans drown in fishing gear each year.
By switching out fish in favour of plant-based alternatives, you can drastically reduce your environmental footprint and help save marine animals.
- Donate to AFD on behalf of someone else
We love the holiday season, so to celebrate we’ll send a personalised e-card for any donation made on behalf of a loved one.
To donate to AFD on behalf of a special someone, head to our donate page and then send us an email at [email protected] with their details and any message you might like to include, and we’ll send them a special thank you e-card!
Whatever your plans these holidays, we hope you stay safe and healthy.
On behalf of the whole AFD team – we wish you a very happy holidays and New Year!
